Automobiles became a common ownership in American families in the 1950's, and leisurely road trips quickly followed. U.S. and State highways were already established and provided the most efficient routes, and along them popped up tourist attractions, motels and automobile shops to accommodate travelers on their journeys.
Tourism and travel expanded throughout Florida over the years, and so did interstate systems such as I-95. These modernized highways provided even faster commutes to larger cities with more desirable destinations. U.S. and State highways became less frequented, and the businesses lining them lost much of their revenue. "Wayside" explores the establishments suffering a slow decay on the road less travelled.
